Water Flow Management: A Crucial Aspect

We prioritize water flow management, employing specialized equipment to ensure a unidirectional flow, directing water to the sides. This strategic approach prevents water retention, a leading cause of pothole formation. Effective water drainage is paramount in safeguarding the life of your driveway and gravel parking lots.

The Impact of Water Retention on Gravel Driveways & Gravel Parking Lots

Water retention significantly accelerates the deterioration of driveways and parking lots. By systematically grading the gravel, we facilitate proper water dispersion to the edges. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also serves as a preventive measure against water accumulation.

Our Comprehensive Step-By-Step

Gravel Driveway Repair Process:

Efficient and Thorough Gravel Driveway Repair and Parking Lot Process

At Precision Landscape, LLC, we follow a methodical, step-by-step process for our gravel driveway restoration.

1. Evaluation and Preparation:

Before preparing the driveway/parking lot for new gravel, we evaluate the job scope with our crew and lay out the grading plan. This includes determining the optimal slope and crown for proper water runoff.

2. Loosening the existing material and potholes repair:

In most cases, we employ a power rake, also known as a Harley rake, to break up and loosen the gravel and soil, depending on the material of your driveway. A power rake allows for breaking the harder surrounding edges of the potholes and evenly loosening the material, especially focusing on the softer center of the pothole. The surrounding edges of the potholes become significantly harder as they are compacted by vehicle's tires each time they pass over, preventing water from effectively draining out of the pothole. Meanwhile, the center of the pothole remains softer, where water accumulates and, over time, deepens, leading to more significant water accumulation.

As mentioned previously, the power rake disrupts this compaction, effectively eliminating the pothole. However, it's important to note that using only a box grader to cover the potholes is not a permanent solution. While we do utilize a box grader, it's primarily to spread the material and grade the driveway or road immediately after employing the power rake. This two-step process ensures a more thorough and lasting repair.

3. Grading for Water Management:

All driveways and roads are constructed differently. If a driveway or road lacks any inclination to either side, we implement a crowning technique. This involves raising the center of the driveway to be the highest point, while the sides of the driveway slope downwards. This design facilitates water flow away from the center of the driveway towards the sides, effectively directing water runoff.

In other cases where water flows predominantly to one side, such as where there is already a ditch present, but needs clearing or where a new one needs to be constructed, having a ditch is extremely important. It is highly recommended to have a ditch for water to flow in these situations. Ditches serve as crucial channels for directing water away from the driveway or road, helping to prevent water buildup and potential damage.

4. Material Application:

Based on your chosen materials, we expertly spread and distribute the material across the designated area.

We chose to use 5/8 inch minus crushed gravel, which offers numerous benefits. One of its primary advantages is its superior compaction compared to larger sizes of gravel.

It provides a much smoother finish and has a better clean appeal compared to other sizes. Another significant benefit is its ease of regrading even after years of use.

5. Thorough Inspection:

Rigorous inspection ensures proper material thickness in all areas. Additional material is applied where needed to achieve the desired thickness.

6. Compaction Perfection:

We implement a compactor, dedicating ample time to guarantee thorough and proper compaction of the materials, ensuring durability and longevity.

After gravel installation, in most cases gravel driveways and parking lots don't need new gravel. As soon as potholes appear, a small amount of gravel can be added only where potholes are appearing, breaking the compaction of the gravel and regrading again without adding the cost of new gravel.

At Precision landscape LLC, our commitment lies not just in repair but in delivering lasting solutions. Trust us for a meticulous process that transforms your gravel surfaces, offering enhanced durability and visual appeal.
